Interchangeable Plates: Save On Your Car Insurance

there is a vehicle registration system that allows you to save a lot of money: interchangeable plates. Did you know that you can get one and the same license plate set for two vehicles of the same class? Find out all the terms and conditions in our article.

What are the conditions for obtaining interchangeable plates?

In Switzerland, license plates are assigned to a person and not to the vehicle. This is why it is possible to use the same license plate for two different vehicles: the interchangeable plates.

The interchangeable plates can be used on the following types of vehicles:

  • Personal car
  • Tourism vehicle
  • Vintage / sports car
  • Motorcycles and other small motor vehicles
  • Tractors
  • Truck
  • Coach / bus
  • Trailer

To be able to use the interchangeable plates on two different vehicles, they must be of the same category. You will not be able, for example, to use the same set of plates for your car and your motorbike. Both vehicles must be parked in the same canton of residence by the same keeper. Both vehicles must be insured by vehicle liability insurance.

It goes without saying that the interchangeable plates cannot be used at the same time on both vehicles. The vehicle without registration must therefore be immobilized on your private property because it is prohibited for an unregistered vehicle to park on public roads.

You can also subscribe to casco insurance for each of your vehicles. You are free to opt for full or partial insurance, it will depend on what coverage you are looking for.

Your casco insurance will cover the vehicle that is not running if it is parked on private land only, so it does not need to have interchangeable plates to be insured, the only condition is not to park on the public road.

How do I get my interchangeable plates?

To obtain your interchangeable plates, all you need to do is go to the road traffic and navigation office in your canton of residence. You will need to provide the following documents:

  • the original vehicle registration document or the expert’s report in the case of a new vehicle.
  • An electronic Civil Liability insurance certificate (issued by your insurer directly to the road traffic office)

The time taken to receive the plates varies from one canton to another. The category of vehicles to be registered will also have an impact on the waiting time to receive your set of plates. However, there is a document to be completed and returned to the post “Provisional authorization to travel in Switzerland” allowing you to travel directly with your vehicle for 20 days from the date of dispatch of the document (postmark as proof). 1 copy should be kept inside the vehicle.

You may need to provide additional documents to obtain your interchangeable plates depending on the vehicle category. If you wish to register a vehicle that is more than 10 years old, you must provide the road traffic office of your canton with an expert report or technical control dating back less than 3 years. If this is not the case, you will have to make an appointment to do voluntary expertise.

Collector’s cars are an exception, you can indeed register more than 2 collector’s cars with your interchangeable plates as long as all the vehicles are well referenced as collector’s car.

What changes regarding my auto insurance?

Obtaining interchangeable plates will save you a lot of money! Both on your premiums and on your road tax.

I save on my vehicle premium

By having one and the same plate set for two vehicles, you will be able to save on your auto insurance premium. In fact, you will only have to pay for one liability insurance. Vehicle Civil Liability insurance is compulsory in Switzerland. You will have to pay the higher premium for the two vehicles only. You will therefore be able to save a premium!

You can also save on your casco insurance. Most insurance companies offer discounts. You will therefore be able to obtain a discount on your second casco insurance to take out with your insurer.

I save on my road tax

As for road tax, with the interchangeable plates you will only pay road tax on the more expensive vehicle of the two. You will therefore be able to save the price of a road tax, which is far from negligible!

Plate deposit, a good alternative to interchangeable plates

There is an alternative to interchangeable plates: depositing the plates. How and why to use it?

It’s very simple, you have a vehicle that sleeps in your garage all winter because you can’t take advantage of it, but you continue to pay for insurance as well as road tax and you wish you could save money on that.

This is the purpose of depositing the plates. You deposit the license plates at the road traffic office of your canton. Your insurance company will be automatically notified of this deposit and may therefore suspend the insurance while the vehicle is immobilized. Some insurance companies continue to cover the vehicle even if you do not pay the premium, others charge certain costs only as part of the casco insurance and suspend the insurance policies for a limited period usually of 6 to 9 months.

When you want to reuse your vehicle, all you need to do is collect your plates from the traffic office with your insurance certificate, you have 12 months maximum to recover them.
